Understanding the Demand
The
standard barrel contains 42 U.S.
gallons of crude oil. What is truly interesting about the refinement of a
typical barrel is that the 42 gallons of crude oil will result in more than 44
gallons of petroleum products. In other words, during the refinement
process, there is actually an increase in the volume of product realized.
This occurs because there is a reduction in the density of some of the original
crude oil as different petroleum products are created during the refinement
process.
The
refining process actually is rather simple. At its essence, refinement
involves the distillation of crude oil into its constituent elements.
After distillation, conversion occurs -- which is the process of “cracking’
molecules to allow for a further refinement of the elements that form crude oil
in the first instance. Finally, enhancement occurs. This is a
process through which the quality of the ultimate product is enhanced in
various ways. For example, sulfur might be removed to increase or enhance
the quality of a product refined from crude oil.
The
largest share of the 42 gallons of crude oil contained in a standard barrel
ends up as finished motor gasoline. Motor gasoline accounts for 19.65
gallons of the finished product. Next in line is distillate fuel oil at
10.03 gallons.
Jet
fuel comes in a rather distant third place in the refinement process. Of
the original 42 gallons of crude oil in a barrel, that portion which will end
up as jet fuel is 4.07 gallons. Residual fuel oil accounts for 1.72
gallons of the overall refined product.
Other
petroleum products that are created from a barrel of oil during the refining
process include: still gas, petroleum coke, liquefied refinery gas,
asphalt and road oil, various oils for food stocks, lubricants, special naphtha’s,
kerosene, waxes and an assortment of other miscellaneous products. (It is
important to note that the different end products that can be produced from a
barrel of oil differ in their percentages depending on what part of the world
the crude oil originated from in the first instance.)
In
reality, when you consider what is produced through the refinement process, it
is hard to imagine another substance on the planet that can result in as many
different products as does crude oil when refined. There is no
exaggeration in saying that crude oil – after refinement – touches nearly every
area of a person’s life…indeed, in many different ways.
According
to Arabs and the OPEC cartel they would prefer the price to be around $75 per
barrel. The pricing level would adequately support their development plans and
the terrorist operations in there country. The USA imported approx 3.6 million
barrels of oil in 2007. Of those 3.66 billion barrels, the U.S. imported from a total of 46
different countries. The top 5 importing countries were: Canada (18.61%), Saudi Arabia (14.50%), Mexico (14.07%), Venezuela (11.48%), and Nigeria (10.80%), for a total of 69.47%
of all American imports. In contrast, imports from countries six through ten (Angola , Iraq , Algeria , Ecuador , and Kuwait ) made up only 17.95% of the
total; countries 11 through 46 made up the remaining 12.58%. The transfer of
monies to these countries from the US to these countries is staggering.
How
do we alleviate this problem of massive fossil fuel based economy? The United States does not have a viable energy
policy. It is true that we are moving to different source of energy such as
solar, wind etc. But how practical are they? The manufactures of ethanol created
havoc in agricultural products thus inflating the price farm products there by
increased prices in food items. No one wants to talk about Nuclear due to the
environmental concerns of the left and the Al Gore likes. Natural Gas, well we have
plenty of it. In fact all Metro buses in Washington DC , is run with Natural Gas. The Hi-Brid
technology is a gimmick. These cars require two engines to operate, both
electric and gasoline. Thus far no one has the political will to go into new
technologies. The solution at this point would be to explore and extract Oil
from the proven sources in ANWAR and all the off shore regions where there is plenty
of Oil.
The
Government and the Leftist radicals are major impediment towards progress. Unfortunately
no one can fire them. Only the ballot box can. Vote them out office in November 2009 and 2010 .If not, we all will be sent back
to the Stone Age.
